The good news is that you don't need to invest huge sums in editing suite accessories going in. Modern video editing programs such as Pinnacle Studio are "kitchen sink" applications, that include all you need to get started.

Except maybe for an easy-to-follow manual. While most of us learn by trial and error, it is tempting to look for the guide that provides specific recommendations. Our advice? Search amazon.com or other such resources for after-market third-party how-to books, instruction videos, etc. The best are usually titled something like Getting started with [name of program].

There are literally dozens if not hundred of "companion products" you can purchase once you have identified the need, but your choice will vary according to which editing program you choose, what you are trying to accomplish, your own pre-existing skill set, and other variables.

A lot of amateurs build ridiculously huge libraries of
-- special effects
-- fancy wipes and dissolves
-- stock footage
-- motion graphics
-- sound effects
-- backgrounds
-- titling aids
-- soundtrack music, and sound effects.

Others want to invest in a fancy scanner or digital camera to supplement their camcorder's potential. Still others choose to follow industry developments by subscribing to video editing magazines or visiting video editing web sites.

Our going-in advice is to keep a firm grip on your wallet, at least until you discover your specific needs. Those looking for a list of optional accessories available will find several listed on our video links page.
