Welcome to the most subjective corner
of the entire site. Our How-to Guides are little more than
notes-to-myself, developed in an attempt to avoid repeating mistakes. Over
time this evolving collection of guides will hopefully help you avoid
pitfalls I discovered the hard way. If you have specific questions email
me. I'll try to answer them here. Given a modern personal computer, one of the newer DV camcorders, and video editing software, almost anyone can make home movies today that out-shine those of yesteryear. So why do so many of today’s digital home movies on DVD (hereafter referred to as amateur videos) put people to sleep? Goodness knows it is not the technology. DV camcorders record better visuals and audio than previous models. DVDs playback that extra quality much better than yesterday’s standard, VHS tape. In fact, from stem to stern the stuff we work with today was pure fantasy just a few short years ago. The problem is most home movie makers don’t know what they are doing. Why should they? It isn’t as if we all studied movie production in school, or practice related skills regularly on the job. This collection of Guides is our attempt to help those who want to produce better video. It is more or less organized around three themes: planning, shooting, and editing. For a complete article list, click on Guide Index, above. |
