at Walsh, Vittoria and Simcoe, Walter studied surveying under Thomas
Walsh. From 1871 to 1884 he handled shipping and bookkeeping for
A. & T. McCall, his brothers Alexander
and Thomas' lumbering business. In 1884 he joined the Canadian Nile
contingent and served with the Nile Expeditionary force, returning
with a "most interesting" collection of Egyptian curios.
He also collected coins and was considered a local authority on the
subject. He re-engaged in lumbering, and married Madge Ferguson, the
widow of C. C. Jackson. In 1896 he was appointed secretary-treasurer
of South Norfok Railway Company. Walter later became
secretary-treasurer of Simcoe Gas Company. In 1897 he was appointed
municipal clerk for the town of Simcoe, a position he held until his
death. He was also superintendent of the town's waterworks and
secretary of the Public Utilities Commission. His careful and
efficient administration of town affairs was said to have been most
conscientious. He died at his home on Stanley Street in Simcoe.
Madge continued to live in Simcoe after Walter's death until about
1934, when she moved to Edmonton, Alberta to live with her son,
Clayton L. Jackson and her grandchildren. |
