Simcoe emerged from the village state and took on the dignity of an
incorporated town with a Mayor and other appurtenances of a larger
municipal residence in the year 1878.
Since then 16 men have had the honor of election at the hands
of their fellow townsmen to the chief magistracy. Of the 16, 13 were given more than one term. In 1882 the late A. Walsh
defeated the late F. Gordon after a fierce contest, but leaving town,
to become the Government Land Commissioner at Winnipeg, almost
immediately afterwards he resigned, serving as Mayor only a few days.
Mr. Wallace declined to accept a second term. Mayor Sihler alone of
the 16 was compelled to face opposition for his second term. The
