Simcoe emerged from
the village state and took on the dignity of an incorporated town with a
Mayor and other apportenances of a larger municipal existence in the
year 1878. Since then sixteen men have had the honor of election at the
hands of their fellow townsmen to the chief magistracy. Of the sixteen,
thirteen were given more than one term.
In 1882 the late A. Walsh
defeated the late F. Gordon after a fierce contest, but leaving town to
become the Government Land Commissioner at Winnipeg, almost immediately
afterwards, he resigned, serving as Mayor only a few days.
Mr. Wallace declined to accept a
second term. Major Sihler alone of the sixteen was compelled to face
opposition for his second term. The complete list reads as follows: --
