Cubs and Clippers Gone But Renton Lingers On

It appears that the hopes of a Norfolk hockey team copping a provincial title now rests on the shoulders of the Renton lads, who have advanced to the finals of the O.R.H.A. playoffs. Within the next week they will meet Tottenham in the final series.

The Renton aggregation is a mixed crew of former well-known hockey players and up-and-coming youngsters.

Not many local fans can fail to recall the exploits up and down the boards by Pete Kelly, former Port Dover stalwart, who is campaigning this season with the Renton team.

Too, there are the Brock boys, Dan and Bob, who have been pushing the old boot-heel around the Renton Quarry since Charlie Mitchell's father first tanned him with a shinny club.

Then there are the O'Mahony boys, Wilfred and John, the former having turned in some fine efforts with Roxy's Reformer Cubs in the early part of the 1937-38 season.

Frank O'Donnell is playing a steady game on the defence. He played a season with the Simcoe Redskins under Major Wark when they had their great season of 1936-37, advancing to the provincial semi-finals.

There are also several other players who are not so readily recalled, but have played a valuable part in Renton's parade toward the provincial finals.

Altogether they are a fairly well-known aggregation and the O'Donnells, Brocks, Kellys and O'Mahonys should instill sufficient "Irish Moxy" into the game to see them through for a Provincial Crown for Norfolk.

The Rentonities  captured the loop title, defeating Teeterville in the semi-finals and Mt. Pleasant in the finals. They met a strong sextette [sic] in the Jerseyville crew in the first-round playoffs, and eked out a 5 to 4 decision on the round. They were stacked against Nelles Corners in the second round and took the series by a wide margin, 10-3.

Norfolk's last remaining team received a bye from that point to the playdowns and have been waiting the outcome of the Sheffield-Tottenham series which the latter team captured last night.

Renton and Tottenham meet tomorrow night at Bolton in the first of a three-game series for the championship. The second game will be played at Simcoe Monday night if the ice is in suitable condition. However, in the event of soft ice the game will be taken to Brantford.
