Smith-Davis family overview
by Kate Ford, Jan 2009

My maternal great-grandfather, Henry Malcolm Oliver Smith, was born 3 Jan 1863, on Lot 1, Concession 4, Walsingham Township, Norfolk County. [See his birth family]

My maternal great-grandmother, Clara Jeanette Davis, was born 7 Oct 1874 on Lot 8, Concession 1, Houghton Township, Norfolk County.
[See her birth family]

They married 10 Jul 1889 at Vienna, Bayham Township, Elgin County, and began their married life near there. They had 18 children, 15 of whom grew to adulthood.

At the time the School Section 9, Houghton, photo was taken in Jun 1903, they had eight living children, the first three of which were born in 1891, 1892 and 1893 near Vienna.

They moved back to Norfolk County, to Fairground, where my grandmother, Mary Rosene was born in 1895.

Their next three children were born 1897, 1898 and 1899, in Houghton Township, "on the farm we called the Truman place near Forsyth Mill," to quote my grandmother.

The 1877 Houghton Township map shows mill owner Thomas Forsyth had a number of land holdings in Houghton, two of which were Lots 9 and 10, Concession 1, right beside Clara's father's farm. The same map shows G. Trueman owned Lot 10, Concession 2, which is very close by.

Their next seven children were born between 1901 and 1912 on another farm in Houghton Township, "at the old place south of Aunt Harriet's place."  Harriet was Clara's sister, married to Albert Downs, who owned Lot 7, Concession 1, on the other side of their father's land.

The last two children were born 1916 and 1919 just outside Simcoe.
See a later photo of Clara with three of her children.

Most of the 15 children spent their entire lives in Norfolk county. Eight of them are buried in Oakwood Cemetery [see our video of Oakwood], one in Greenwood Cemetery at Waterford, and one at Vittoria United [see our video of Vittoria United]. There are three buried in Aylmer, one in Welland County, and the youngest is still living.

Henry, his parents and seven of his siblings are also buried at Oakwood. Clara is buried Aylmer. Clara's parents, and some siblings, are buried at Glen Meyer [see our video of Glen Meyer Cemetery].
