On Friday,
October 14th, two days before her 92nd birthday, Mrs. Wm. Nevett
passed away at her home in St.
Williams. The funeral was held Monday afternoon, interment being
in the Newkirk Cemetery. The deceased was born at "Walnut
Cottage," near Vittoria, in 1829. Her father, Major Daniel
McCall, was the first white child born in the Township of Walsingham,
and took part in the War of 1812, as well as against the rebels in
1837. Her grandfather, Major Duncan McCall, served as a captain of the
Norfolk Militia at Lundy's Lane, and as the Conservative
representative for South Norfolk from 1824 to 1833 at Toronto (then
York). In 1851 she married William Nevett, of Louth, Lincolnshire,
England. After living for a few years at the farm near Vittoria and at
Simcoe, the couple resided permanently at St. Williams, where the
husband died in 1898.
Mrs. Nevett retained all her faculties until the last, and was
unusually well versed in religious and political matters. She was a
member of the Anglican Church and took an active interest in the work
of other denominations also. The Bible Society always received her
enthusiastic support. She is survived by one brother, Francis, of
Alberta, and a number of nephews and nieces.
