On
Thursday evening last Mr. John Y. King passed away at his home in Port
Dover. Deceased was in his 82nd year and had been a resident of the
county for nearly 42 years. He was greatly esteemed by all who knew
him and was one of Norfolk's best citizens.
He came to Canada from Howick,
Scotland, in 1880, and after a few months spent in Brantford and
Hamilton, came on to Simcoe, where he served for a time as
baggagemaster at the Air Line station.
In 1882 he bought a farm in
Woodhouse, near Wiggin's schoolhouse, and remained on it for over 35
years, removing about six years ago to Port Dover, where he had since
lived.
In 1877 he was married in
Scotland to Jessie Campbell of Aberfeldy, who survives him, as well as
five sons -- Robert H., of Okanagan Valley, B.C.; James of Detroit;
Samuel L., of Simcoe; John C., clerk of Woodhouse Township; Edward, of
Pontiac, Mich.; and one daughter, Mrs. (Captain) C. O. Macdonald of
Port Dover. There were two other children: William H., and Mrs. W. J.
Gunton, both deceased.
The late Mr. King was tax
assessor for both the village of Port Dover and the township of
Woodhouse for several years and always took a lively interest in
public affairs.
He was a staunch Presbyterian
and was an elder in Knox Presbyterian Church, Port Dover, and was a
fine example of a cheery, courteous, educated Scotsman.
The funeral was held Sunday
afternoon to Oakwood Cemetery, Simcoe, and was largely attended. The
Woodhouse township council attended in a body. The services were
conducted by the Rev. John Robertson of Port Dover, and Captain
Robinson, Capt. Macauley, J. R. Waddle, Freeman Henderson, R. Tibbetts
and Silas Butler acted as pall-bearers.
