Hartford General Store (on the south
side of Townsend Concession 3 at the northeast tip of Norfolk) [GPS:
43.00.221/080 10.935] is almost a
museum of early retailing in Norfolk County. It features a double door
entrance, the modern one you see above between the windows, and the
pre-renovation door (recessed about two feet from the first) from an
bygone era. Wooden shelves line both side walls, just as they did most
local general stores 100 years ago. The freezers are new, the scales are
circa 1950, the only cash register appears to be a 1880s model.
Merchandise for sale includes flowers, brooms, groceries and snacks.
