H. H. Groff
"Born in Simcoe in 1853, the second son of Henry
Groff, Esq. Educated at the old Simcoe Grammar School. Served an apprenticeship as
druggist with Dr. Wilson, Simcoe's first Mayor.
Next was
engaged with a large lumber firm in Tonawanda, N.Y. Returned to Simcoe to enter the
Federal Bank, finally becoming its assistant manager. On the closing of that institution,
Mr. Groff engaged successfully for some years in a private banking business.
Later became
the first manager of the Molsons Bank here and is still
retained by the bank in an advisory capacity. Mr. Groff attained world-wide fame through
his success in the scientific hybridization of gladioli, capturing innumberable medals and
trophies at the largest expositions on the continent, chief among them the Gold Medal
Grand Prize at the World's Fair, St. Louis, in 1904. He has been President Norfolk County
Agricultural Society, Hon. President Norfolk Poultry Association, First Vice-President
Simcoe Reunion of Norfolk Old Boys. President Simcoe Horticultural Society."Also
