Hon. John Charlton
"Born at Garbuttsville, New York, February 3rd, 1829. In 1849 his family moved
to Waterloo County, Ontario, located a mile south of Ayr. John had attended schools,
clerked in a store, tried amateur printing, dabbled a little in law, cut wood on his
father's farm, etc., and in 1849 commenced work on his father's farm near Ayr.
In 1853 he
went to Lynedoch, in Norfolk County, and engaged in mercantile business and lumbering.
In
1872 he was elected to the House of Commons and continued a member for 32 years until
1904. He was a member of the Joint High Commission, which had its last meeting at
Washington, D.C., in 1900. On account of failing health, resulting partly from a railway
accident, he gave up his parliamentary work in 1904. He died at Lynedoch in February,
1910."
