Some Staunch Old Oddfellows |
"Some Staunch Old Oddfellows. Standing, left to right -- Henry Johnson, Charles Allen. Seated, left to right -- John Carvill, William Sutton, John Reeve. "William Sutton is the Grand Old Man of Simcoe Oddfellows, not only because he is now the senior member of the local Lodge, but for his sterling qualities and what he has done for the Order in the past. For over forty years he has been the efficient Treasurer of Simcoe Lodge, and in the earlier history he didn't hesitate to pay its bills when they were rendered, whether there was any money in the treasury or not. Like the rest of those in the picture, he is a P.G. Mr. Sutton's connection with the Order dates from the 4th of May, 1876. He is an Englishman and hails from Glorious Old Devon, the home of the old English sea kings and the land of cream and cider. "John Reeve is another Englishman, having first seen the light of day in old Suffolk, not far from the Norfolk line. He joined the order on the 22nd of June, 1877. Mr. Reeve is a P.C.P., of Simcoe Encampment, and a member of Fern Lodge No. 50 of the Degree of Rebekah. "Charles Allen was born at Beachville, in Oxford County, but has lived practically the whole of his long life in Simcoe. On the 17th of April, 1880, he became one of the Three-Linkers, and for several terms, many years ago, he was the Treasurer of Simcoe Lodge. "John Carvill is from the land of Uncle Sam, have been born in Helena, St. Lawrence County, New York State. He came to Simcoe while a young man. His connection with the Order, which is so dear to him, began on the 6th of January, 1882. "Henry Johnson was born in Windham Township, Norfolk County, and became an
Oddfellow on the 14th day of May, 1886. He is a P.N.G. of Fern Lodge, D. of R., and a
P.C.P. of Simcoe Encampment. He has been Treasurer of the 'Camp' for the past ten
years. He is also a P.D.G.M. of Long Point District, and is a member of Canton Victoria No. 5, of
the Patriarchs Militant, at St. Thomas." |
