William Finlay

Wm. Finlay, Esq., came from Lower Canada to Simcoe in 1833.  His father, James Finlay, had for many years been a partner in the North-West Fur Company, and in the war of 1812 took an active part, with the rank of Lt.-Colonel.

Mr. Finlay brought with him a thorough knowledge of business, and by his industry and sagacity soon became one of the most successful merchants of the County.  For many years he had establishments in Simcoe and Vittoria, including the mills and distillery new owned by N. E. Ford and Co.  He also held several public offices, having been appointed Commissioner of the Court of Requests, in association with Col. Salmon, and the late Judge Wilson.  He was also appointed Lt. Colonel of 1st Regiment, Norfolk Militia.  It is many years since Mr. Finlay retired from business, but he still enjoys excellent health, and a reputation for integrity which recalls the words of Tennyson:
"Whatever record leap to light,
  He never shall be shamed."
