The original photo is the property of John Tomlinson, who provided us with the scan to share, but warns "I don't have a lot of information about it." For example, there is nothing on either side of the photo that identifies the photographer or the date this photo was taken.

John Tomlinson's mother, Blanche Russell, was born in 1908 and appears in this photo. Blanche appears to be "maybe 6 or 7 [years of age] in this photo" according to John, "So that makes it [the date of the photo] circa 1914."

Someone, presumably Blanche, at sometime, identified a few of the students in the photo. Those identifications have been added to the head & shoulder photo and biography pages for those individuals, attributed to Blanche.

We hope to eventually augment our list of student names by cross-referencing it against a list of students promoted at Round Plains School (S.S. 3, Union, Townsend) Public School published in the Simcoe Reformer. Identifications provided by site visitors are credited on the appropriate individual's web pages.

While we appreciate the efforts of all who have identified students, identifications should be considered tentative until confirmed. The older the "last updated" date on each bio web page, the higher our confidence in that identification.

The original black and white print measures approximately 5 inches by 7 inches. There are 38 people (students and teacher) in the picture.

Round Plains Public School was a one-room elementary school house located at Round Plains, north of Simcoe and west Waterford. All students are assumed to have lived within a small radius of the school.

At the time this photo was taken, Ontario elementary education consisted of eight grades:
1 through 8. Typically students would have started high school at approximately age 5 and graduated eight years later, age 13, so the students in this photo would have been born between approximately 1899 and 191o.
