According
to his brother Harold's notes, Alan was born at 99 Colborne Street
North, Simcoe; was musically inclined, rather analytical, and fond
of nature. His favourite subjects were math and biology. Alan
married Gertheal while home during WWI to complete his medical
education, then served three years head of pathological department
of the Canadian Military Hospital at Lyminge, England. After WWI,
Alan and Gertheal lived their entire adult lives in Simcoe, most of
it at 135 Union Street. A 1920 ad for his medical practice offered
x-ray examinations and treatments and an extensive laboratory at his
office, 28 Robinson Street. Gertheal married five years after her
father died. She died less than a year before Alan, who knew he was
dying when six months later he married Vivian, who had been his
office nurse.
