William Edgar
Cantelon, well-known local artist, died in Norfolk General Hospital
on Friday in his 84th year. His death followed a long period of
failing health.
Born near
Streetsville, Mr. Cantelon was a son of the late William Cantelon
and Catherine Jane Eakins. He was educated in the Streetsville
district and started painting at an early age. He studied art in
Chicago for a time and came to this district from Georgetown 61
years ago, residing on a farm in Woodhouse Township. During the past
several years he had spent considerable time in town, his studio
being located at 40 Norfolk Street South.
Mr. Cantelon
was widely known for his paintings and his annual exhibit was always
a feature of the Norfolk County Fair. He also had painted baptistry
scenes for numerous churches in this district and elsewhere.
Intensely interested in local history, deceased was recently made a
life member of the Norfolk Historical Society, of which he was
curator. His works of art included a collection of more than 300
paintings depicting scenes and portraits associated with Norfolk
County's early history. These were purchased by the Historical
Society and now are displayed prominently at the Eva Brook Donly
Museum of Arts and Antiques in Simcoe. Mr. Cantelon was an adherent
of Woodhouse United Church.
Surviving are
two brothers, Ernest of Woodhouse and Alfred of Dutton.
The funeral
will be held on Tuesday at 3.30 o'clock from the Walsh Funeral Home
with Rev. George E. Morley of Woodhouse United Church officiating
and interment in Woodhouse United Cemetery.
