The Norfolk Historical Society is
photocopying and indexing Norfolk Vital Stats. For $5 per ($4US) they will
snail mail you a copy of any specific birth, marriage or death record in
their Vital Stats Finding Aids Library.
These are copies of the original County ledgers, registrations forwarded to the Ontario government as the official record. Birth registrations include the child's name and date or birth, mother's maiden name, father's occupation and place of residence. Marriage registrations include the name, age, place of birth, martial status, and occupation of bride and groom, names of parents and witnesses, place and date of marriage. Death registrations include name, age, residence, occupation, cause, date and place of death. To order, mail the source document
code found [in square brackets] at the end of OVSFA entries, and cheque or
money order (made out to the Norfolk Historical Society) to: |
In 1869 the Ontario introduced a
law that required all future births, marriages and deaths be reported to
the government. It took about three years to establish the system, but
since 1872 most, if not all, births, marriages and deaths were recorded by
local officials and submitted as Ontario Vital Statistics.
Many of these Ontario Vital Stats survive on microfilm and are available for viewing at the Ontario Archives in Toronto. Unfortunately they are organized by date, not surname or even County. So finding a specific record can literally take days or weeks. Members of the Norfolk Historical Society are enhancing their collection of genealogy Finding Aids by photocopying Norfolk County pages from the Ontario Vital Stats, organizing them by event and year, then indexing them. As this effort continues, visitors to the Society's Archives Reading Room at the Eva Brook Donly Museum in Simcoe, will be able to find the record they seek in just minutes, and photocopy it for their own records for just 25 cents. That's fine for local researchers but what about those that live at a distance? That's where this web site can help. As they are completed, we'll add their indexes to B-M-D Etc., helping you identify pages you'd like photocopied. |
For $5 each -- each being defined as a single page of births, marriages or deaths, including the one you seek, volunteers at the Museum will photocopy a single page of their Ontario Vital Stats photocopies and snail mail it to you. (A 25 percent discount is offered those paying in U.S. dollars.) Please specify you are ordering Ontario Vital Stats Finding Aid photocopies and listing the code for each specific record you want. Include your email address to speed communication if your order needs clarifying. Orders received without the Finding Aid code and a cheque for the amount of the order cannot be processed. [Tip: You may want to simply cut and paste the entry(s) and include it with your cheque.] Order directly from: Why would you want a photocopy? There is always a chance our summary is inaccurate. Moreover, source documents include additional information not found in newspapers or other accounts.. Most birth records provide the maiden name of the mother, the township and occupation of the father. Most marriage records provide the age, parents, occupation, and place of birth, of both bride and groom. Death records include cause of death, deceased occupation, etc. Here's a sample page of 1881 Ontario Vital Stats births B-M-D Etc. is an index, a roadmap for more information -- not an alternative to Archive holdings research. We urge every researcher to verify B-M-D Etc. findings against the original source document. Norfolk County Ontario Vital Stats
