PIONEER WOMAN PASSES

The following from the 20 Jan 1921 Daily News of Petoskey, Michigan, in reference to the death of Mrs. Ruth Hazelton, formerly of Townsend Township, will be of interest to some of the oldest residents of Norfolk County:

Petoskey was bereft of one of its respected pioneer women Thursday morning, when death claimed Mrs. Ruth Hazelton, widow of the late Wellington B. Hazelton, at the home of her son, Glenn Hazelton, of Rose street. Mrs. Hazelton, 71, had been in poor health for several years and confined to her bed for the last nine weeks.

Mrs. Hazelton was born 3 Dec 1850 in Townsend Township. After leaving she went to South Carolina, where she married Wellington B. Hazelton on 20 Dec 1876. About a year later they came to Petoskey.

Mrs. Hazelton was a member of the First Methodist Church and Sunday School. She was also a member of Lombard Women's Relief Corps of this city.

She is survived by three children: Mrs. Geo. Trask, Mrs. Chester Gibson, and Glenn Hazelton,, all of Petosky; one brother, George Kellum of Delhi, and one sister, Mrs. A. Smith of St. Catharines, Ontario.

Her deceased husband, Wellington B. Hazelton was a grandson of Peter Hazelton, one of the pioneer settlers of Townsend, who moved into that township in 1838.
