Driver of Car
is Absolved From All Blame
James Ward of Lucan was
exonerated of all responsibility in connection with the death of
Mrs. Walter Sovereign of Lucan, who died as a result of being struck
by a motor car driven by him on the evening of 19 May 1921.
Twelve eye-witnesses were
heard, and after their testimony had been taken, the jury rendered
the following verdict:
"That Edith Sovereign
came to her death from injuries sustained by being struck by a motor
car on the evening of 19 May 1921 on Main Street in Lucan, said car
being driven by James Ward of Lucan, and from the evidence
submitted we are agreed that the accident could not have been
avoided and that the driver of said car, James Ward, was in no way
to blame for the accident."
Crown Attorney J. B.
McKillop conducted the case for the crown.
Mrs. Sovereign, wife of the
publisher of the Lucan Sun, was crossing the road with her
daughter, 6, and a neighbor, Mrs. McIlhargey, 60, when an
automobile struck them unawares. Mrs. McIlhargey sustained a
compound fracture of the hip and her condition is considered serious
on account of her advanced age. Mrs. Sovereign's daughter was only
slightly injured, but Mrs. Sovereign had three ribs broken and died
Tuesday of last week of her injuries.
She is survived by a husband
and five small children. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Yocum of
Jarvis, attended the funeral, which was held Saturday afternoon of
last week. -- Simcoe Reformer.
