Obituary
Waverly, Iowa -- The remains
of Mrs. Clara Sharon Barber, so well known to the older residents of
Waverley, were brought here from Canada, Monday, 20 Dec 1920, and
laid to rest by the side of her husband, Dr. William M. Barber, in
Harlington cemetery.
Clara Sharon was born in
Canada 79 years ago last August and died at the home of her daughter
on Saturday, 18 Dec 1920. On 20 Nov 1867 she married Dr. Barber and
three years later they located in Waverly and this was their home
for many years.
To them were born five
children, all of whom survive her except one son, Fred, who died in
New York three years ago. The children are:
W. P. Barber of Monroe, Iowa;
T. R. Barber of Yetter, Iowa;
Mrs. Clara McCormick of Teeterville, Ontario;
and S. D. Barber of Seabright, N.Y.
She is also survived by two sisters and one brother, all of whom are
older than Mrs. Barber.
During the long period of
her residence in Waverly, Mrs. Barber was very active in the
religious and social life of the community, always ready to assume
the leadership in everything that pertained to the good of the
community.
She was a member of the
Methodist Episcopal Church and had been president of the Ladies Aid
Society, the Foreign and Home Missionary societies of that Church,
president of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, president of
the Women's Relief Corps, and Most Excellent Chief of the local
Pythian Sisters.
She was of a cheerful,
loving disposition and her friends were numbered in hosts. For the
past five years Mrs. Barber has been ill. Four years of this time
having been spent in a chair. However through all this affliction
she did not lose her all-abiding faith in God and she died as she
lived, a true, consistent Christian.
Funeral services were held
at the home in Teeterville, after which the body as shipped to
Waverly, accompanied by Mrs. McCormick, and arrived at Waverly
Monday at 10.08 a.m. A brief service conducted by Rev. J. D. Clinton
was held in the Wile and Masaer Undertaking Chapel after which
interment was made in Harlington Cemetery.
