BOXING TOURNAMENT

The boxing tournament held in the Mason Arena last Thursday night drew an attendance of about 350 spectators. It was the first boxing program in Simcoe since recruiting days. The bouts were conducted in three rounds of two minutes each. The summary of the events follows:

Preliminaries

125-lb. Class -- Ashford of Simcoe vs. Mater of Silver Hill. (1) Ashford looked heavier and pressed hard in the opening. This ended in a clinch and the bell rang at the breakaway. Ashford's round. (2) Mater began aggressively. Ashford stood him off and took the lead, landing right and left on body. Both warmed up and the exhibition was better. Ashford's round. (3) Mater pressed his heavier opponent, who was warned for holding in a clinch, Mater showed some fatigue. Ashford got the round and the bout.

135-lb. Class -- K. Knowles vs. A. Watts. (1) Knowles pressed, but Watts gave no ground. The pair appeared evenly matched. Knowles' round. (2) A fast mill, Watts pressing and Knowles stoutly on the defensive. Watts' round. (3) Knowles outclassed in a fast mill, which was closed short to save Knowles. Watts' round and bout.

2nd 135-lb. Class -- D. Jamieson vs. G. Knowles. Knowles won in one round, which was fast, but Jamieson was no match for him, being too light.

145-lb. Class -- C. Potts vs. L. McDonald. There was little pep in the first round, but McDonald lacks condition and was saved by the bell. In the third, Potts exhibited more steam behind his blows and McDonald was fagged but before the time was up. Potts' bout.

156-lb. Class -- Pickersgill of Langton vs. Wilson of Rockford. (1) Wilson led with splendid foot work. Pickersgill kept on the soft pedal, lands fairly and misses an upper cut. A clinch follows. In the break Pickersgill landed a wicked upper cut and repeated. It was a good round. (2) Wilson leads. Pickersgill lands a straight left jab to the face, missed an uppercut and got in a straight left. Wilson failed to land; was aggressive, but used only a right swing. (3) Wilson pressed to a clinch. After the break Pickersgill landed repeatedly and straight left. Wilson swings and misses, but pressing, got a stinging left on the side of jaw. Wilson congratulated Pickersgill in the latter's corner.

Finals

135 -- Watts lost to G. Knowles in a close bout, the latter showing more pep if unable to put the momentum behind his blows. It was a popular decision.

145 -- C. Potts defeated G. Howard in a fast mill.

155 -- A. L. Jeffries presided while Pickersgill outclassed T. Golding of Rockford. Golding did a deal of ineffectual rushing in the first. The second was a succession of rushes and clinches till Pickersgill landed on the chin and followed with a right and left to the body. His second bout against a fresh opponent was a win.

The tournament was held under the auspices of the recently organized Simcoe Athletic Association. The attendance indicated that the local public is ready to support good clean amateur sport.
