Mrs. John Nicol

After an illness of about six months, Mrs. John Nicol passed peacefully to her rest on 17 Mar 1910 at "Avonford" her late residence on lot 3 concession 4, Walpole.

Deceased was born 16 Dec 1842 in Bauffshire, Scotland. She visited Canada for a brief period with her father in 1858, returning to this county 10 years later and settling in Port Dover where she was united in marriage to Mr. John Nicol on 22 Mar 1869.

After residing in Port Dover for upwards of a year she removed with her husband to Walpole, where she afterwards resided continuously until the time of her death, the last 30 years being spent on the farm on which she died.

Besides the sorrowing husband there are left to mourn the loss of a devoted mother two sons, Charles of Walpole and Rev. John L. of Queen's University, Kingston, and two daughters, Mrs. Alex Mercer of Hamilton and Miss Annie, a graduate in nursing of the Buffalo General Hospital, who was her mother's constant attendant during her long illness.

Of the five brothers and sisters of deceased two survive. Rev. Peter Nicol [sic] of Demorestville, Ont. and Mrs. John Carmichael of Hamilton.

Knox Church, Jarvis, has lost one of its most faithful and consistent members and the community a true friend whose words of sympathy and kindly assistance in hours of need will not soon be forgotten. Interment took place in Knox Church Cemetery on 19 Mar 1910, following which services were held in the church, the pastor Rev. D. M. Buchanan taking as his text Rev. 14, 13.

The heartfelt sympathy of a large circle of friends is extended to the bereaved husband and family in their hour of trial.
