DEATH
OF PETER MOORE
One of the best known
residents of Townsend Township, in the person of the late Peter
Moore, aged 74 years, died on
11 Aug 1920.
Deceased is survived by a
widow, four daughters: Mrs. O. L. Clark of Waterford,
Mrs. B. Kellum, Mrs. Ansley Kellum, near Waterford, and Mrs. F. E.
Culver of Townsend, and two sons, Allen, on the homestead on the
7th Concession of Townsend, and Archie, on the 6th Concession.
The deceased father, the
late Edward Moore, came from Hull, Yorkshire, England in 1844. He
landed at New York in May, made his way as best he could to
Toronto, and shortly started to work for a farmer for the summer.
In September [1844]
he bought the farm lately own by the deceased and as the whole
place was covered with timber, had to commence the life of a
pioneer.
A house was built, and in
April 1845, Mrs. Moore and family of six children, from 6 to 17
years of age, came over the sea to their new home in the bush. In
those days it took about six weeks to cross the Atlantic.
The late Peter Moore was
born on this new homestead 11 Jul 1846, and lived there
continuously until his demise.
The funeral took place to
Greenwood Cemetery. Services were conducted by Rev. S. H. Lamb of
Villa Nova Baptist Church.
