The Late Clark E. [sic] Matthews

On Monday, 2 Aug 1920, after a lingering illness borne with Christian fortitude, Adam Clark Matthews of Port Dover, passed to the Great Beyond, having reached on his earthly journey six years beyond the three score and ten assigned by the Psalmist of old as the limit of men's earthly pilgrimage.

Deceased was born in the Township of Woodhouse and had resided within four miles of the village till his removal here nine years ago.

He had served on the local Board of Education. For over 30 years, Mr. Matthews was leader of the local Presbyterian choir and was always willing to assist the choirs of other denominations on special occasions.

Ever a friend of those of the younger generations, Mr. Matthews delighted in gathering the youthful around him and spending a pleasant evening, in in this he was ably seconded by his helpmate who survives him.

Mr. and Mrs. Matthews celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, 8 Apr 1919, and this was the occasion for a notable gathering of relatives and friends who, by their tangible tokens of regard, testified to the esteem in which Uncle Clarke [sic] and Aunt Jen were held by them.

.The funeral took place on Wednesday, the services being conducted by his pastor, Rev. J. Robertson.

Deceased was a past master of Erie Lodge, No. 149, A.F and A.M., and the impressive funeral service of the order was conducted at his late residence and at the cemetery. Interment was made in Port Dover Cemetery.

Adam Clarke Matthews has passed beyond our ken, but memories of his gentle, kindly courtesy will still linger with the many who had the privilege of knowing him intimately.

The sympathy of the community goes out to his wife in this, her hour of bereavement.
