Died Suddenly

Walter Ferris of Port Rowan died suddenly Wednesday morning. Arising in apparently good health, he partook of breakfast as usual, and shortly afterwards dropped dead. He suffered a cerebral hemorrhage about three years ago, and it is assumed that a recurrence of the same took place yesterday.

Who was Walter Ferris? Ask any fisher or hunter who has spent a day or a week at the Long Point cottages during the past quarter century or more, and he will tell you that he was the genial keeper of the cottages at the "Point." He was a part of the place, one of Norfolk's most popular citizens.

He was known to sportsmen all over southwestern Ontario from farm, village, town and city. He catered to the comfort and enjoyment of every guest as only Walter Ferris knew how. Hospitality was the dominant principle in his make up.

The death or Walker P. Ferris, which occurred suddenly at his home last Wednesday, cast a gloom over the entire village. He had been in cheerful conversation with many friends about town the previous afternoon and appeared as well as usual.

Mr. Ferris was a son of the late Charles Ferris, and his mother, by whom he is survived, and who now lives in Los Angeles, Cal., Miss Julia Reeves Ferris. He is born in St. Williams and was 63 years of age at the time of his death.

He married Miss Charlotte Glover, a daughter of the late John Glover of Port Rowan, who survives, with two sons, Hanson and Augustus, who with their families reside in this village. The bereaved family was distracted by the great sorrow so suddenly thrust upon them.

Mr. Ferris was chief warden for the Long Point Company for over 30 years, and possessed their entire confidence. He was an honored citizen of this village, a prominent member of the Methodist Church and a man of the utmost integrity.

The funeral, held on Friday, was under Masonic auspices, there being over 100 members of the order in the procession. The large and commodious residence was filled to overflowing with people in attendance at the service. Among the many from a distance whose names could be obtained were: Mr. and Mrs. C. Rodgers of Toronto;
O. Woodruff and H. H. Collier of St. Catharines;
F. Smye, J. Leslie, J. Henderson, B. Summerville, J. Gurnett,
J. M. Cunningham and C. McIlroy of Hamilton;
E. Cutler, W. C. Tobias, T. Brown, Dr. Lipsey, C. Lipsey, of St. Thomas;
G. M. McKiee, F. Reid, J. B. Jackson, W. P. Price and W. C. McCall of Simcoe.

The Rev. J. M. Smith of Neal Memorial Church conducted the services with the Rev. J, M. Smith of the Baptist Church assisting. Interment took place in the Newkirk Cemetery at St. Williams.
