Dean Evans of Montreal
succumbs to pneumonia

Prominent Anglican Divine Born
in Woodhouse 75 Years Ago

Montreal, 5 Oct 1920 -- The Very Rev. Thomas Frye Lewis Evans, Dean of Montreal and Rector of St. Stephen's Church, Westmount, who was born in Woodhouse, Norfolk County, 75 years ago, and who in 1867, following his ordination was in charge of the mission at Norwich, died in his Rectory yesterday of pneumonia. His family were [sic] present when he passed away.

Several years ago Dean Evans celebrated his jubilee in the priesthood and last Sunday he officiated at the early celebration of holy communion at St. Stephen's, as he had for over 40 years. At the morning service he preached a sermon of unusual power and immediately afterward became seriously indisposed. He was able to proceed unaided to the Rectory, where he collapsed. His doctor was called and found him suffering from pneumonia.

Dean Evans took his degree at Trinity College, Toronto, and was ordained there. He came to Montreal in 1871, as junior curate at Christ Church Cathedral, later becoming senior assistant and canon.

Shortly afterwards he was appointed Rector of St. Stephen's and through his efforts what is now known as St. Edward's Church was built. He was chaplain of the Grenadier Guards and a member of the Royal Victoria Lodge of Free Masons.

His first wife was a daughter of the late Strachan Bethune, K.C., of Montreal. She died some years ago and he then married Emily, daughter of the late Robert Bethune of Toronto.

Dean Evans was a candidate for the Bishopic of Montreal after the death of the late Bishop Carmichael.

----------

Dean Evans was the youngest son of Rev. Francis Evans, the first or pioneer Rector of St. John's Church, Woodhouse, who had 12 children, only two of whom now survive, namely: Mrs. Hincks, widow of Canon Hincks, and Dr. Hamilton Evans of Toronto. Mrs. Frank Bowlby of Simcoe is a neice, her father being a brother of the late Canon Evans.
