Death of War
Veteran
The Brock Rangers (114
Battalion of Haldimand) lost another of their number in the person
of Sergeant James Betteridge of Townsend, who died on Thursday, 15
Sep 1921. His death is traceable directly to the effects of his
being gassed overseas. He was a native of Romsey, Hampshire,
England.
The funeral on Saturday to
the Waterford cemetery was largely attended. The pall-bearers were
all overseas companions and veterans of the Brock Rangers --
Scott Laidlaw, Dan Hunt, Cecil Thomas, Wm. Slack, Owen Richards and
Harry Fossey.
Many and beautiful were the
floral tokens we noticed, especially those from his widow, the
Speller family,
Mr. & Mrs. George Linden, the Bearers, Linden family, Mr. &
Mrs. J. W. Riley, Mr. & Mrs. C. G. McKeen,
Mr. & Mrs. H. H. Huffman, Mr. & Mrs. Ellison Bowman.
The service was conducted by
his pastor, Rev. Mr. Whitelaw, who preached an appropriate sermon
from Eccl. 8 and 8, "There is no discharge in that War." A
community choir rendered very touchingly an anthem "Does Jesus
Care."
A widow, little daughter and
brother in Canada mourn his departure. He was a faithful and loyal
soldier, a thirty and industrious citizen.
