One of the early residents of Shoal Lake Village [Manitoba]
passed away on Thursday, 17 Feb 1910, in the person of Mrs. Wm.
Bates, at the advanced age of 73 years, after an illness lasting
some five or six weeks.
Previous to Christmas she had been in every good health and
able to attend to her household duties, but since she was taken
ill had been gradually growing weaker, the end coming shortly
after 12 o'clock on Thursday. For some hours previous to her death
she had been unconscious, and passed quietly away without
recognizing those about her.
The late Mrs. Bates was born in 1837 at the village of York in
County of Haldimand, Ontario, where she lived with her parents
until her marriage, when she removed to Nanticoke, Ontario.
The country at this time was an almost unbroken wilderness.
Here she resided until 1885 when she removed west, going to Shoal
Lake. The year following, Mr. Bates built the Lakeview House where
they made their home. The first Sunday School in Shoal Lake had
its beginning in this building, and prominent among the workers
was Mrs. Ball.
She was a pioneer in Ontario and in Manitoba, and could relate
many an interesting story of the early days. With her decease a
long and useful life came to a close.
She leaves a husband and one son, Albert E. Evans of Simcoe,
Ont., to mourn her lost, to whom the sympathy of all will be
extended at this time.
Mrs. A. S. Arnold and Mrs. R. Medcalf of Shoal Lake, and Mrs.
W. H. Hay of Hamilton, Ont., are stepdaughters of deceased.
The funeral took place on Saturday, 19 Feb 1910 and was largely
attended.
