There passed away
after a short illness of painless sleep at the family residence and home
of her daughter in North Walsingham, on Saturday, September 4, an old
and respected pioneer in the person of Alzina White, widow of the late
Daniel Abbott, in her 87th year.
The deceased was the youngest
daughter of John and Jane White, who settled at Forestville when Norfolk
was a howling wilderness, and bears and wolves were frequent
prowlers.
Her school days were spent in
Brantford at the home of her uncle, who was then the chief magistrate of
the embryo city. Her higher education was obtained at Rochester
Seminary, N.Y., where she graduated with honors.
Returning home she took out
first class papers as a school teacher, which profession she followed
until her marriage in 1854, during the Crimean war. The last school she
taught was at Port Royal, where men and women now old still cherish her
memory as their guiding star in their youth.
She settled on the farm where
she spent her life time and where she died. Her sunny disposition and
Christian character won for her a host of friends. She took a keen
interest in the affairs of the church and state, and was happy making
small articles for our boys at the front. In religion she was proud to
be known as a Methodist of the old school.
There remain to mourn her loss
of a kind and loving mother, two sons: John of Colorado, and Al of Port
Rowan; and one daughter, Mrs. Jas. Brayley of Langton.
The funeral services were
conducted at the home by her pastor, Rev. Mr. Chapman, and her mortal
remains were laid to rest in Marston cemetery.
