A glance at the Village and its Business Interests.
Some of the Reasons why the Village should prosper.
A Business Review of some of our Leading Firms.

In this edition of the Star the aim has been to present in brief form a description of the advanced business facilities of Waterford and a few words in reference to some of our leading firms. That the town possesses many real and permanent advantage which by proper management would place it in the front ranks among its rivals is a fact apparent to every observer. The temporary drawbacks to town has sustained in the past affords no reason for lack of public spirit and enterprise on the part of our business men. On the contrary there are many reasons for encouragement and the indications point to a rapid rise of substantial business prosperity. Waterford is bound to come to the front, and after the temporary lull of business the town is already entering on a renewed area of business advancement that will restore with increased force her old time vigor and prosperity...
 

J. J. Church

The above named gentleman as is well known is engaged in the business of manufacturing Harness of all kinds and is meeting with good success. He keeps on hand a first-class stock of all kinds of Harness also Trunks, Valises, Whips, etc., e. c. He has be established about 20 years.
 

J. F. Aitken

A few words in our business sketches in reference to the popular drug business of the enterprising gentleman names above cannot fail to be of general interest. Mr. Aitken has been established about 2 years and has rapidly make his business one of the most favored in town. He is a skilled and thoroughly experienced Chemist and Druggist, and is a member of the Ontario and New York Colleges of Pharmacy, and under successful management his business has reached a very high standard. The store is a model of neatness and artistic taste. The stock of drugs is selected with the greatest of care for their purity. Prescription work is carefully and promptly attended to. The stock consists of pure Drugs of all kinds, and Druggist Sundries, and leading Patent Medicines, School Books and supplies, Wall Papers, etc. The Store also contains the Central Telephone office and the Waterford Public Library of which Mr. Aitken is the Librarian. The business is in every respect a good one and we are pleased to note its success.
 

A. McRae

In putting before the public an edition of the Star descriptive of Waterford's leading business interests, we have pleasure in calling the attention of our readers to this large and flourishing business which is on of the oldest establishments in our town. The business enjoys a large share of public patronage and has done much to maintain the mercantile interests of Waterford. The stock of goods kept is large, varied and well assorted, and is as fine as the markets afford. It consists of Dry Goods, as Ladies Fancy Dress and Staple Goods, of which there is a splendid assortment, Silks, Laces, Gloves, Hosiery, &c., Haberdashery, staple as Prints, Cottons, Shirtings, Cottonades, Cretonnes, &c., also Boots and Shoes, Hats and Caps. A large stock of Ready made Clothing, secured from the best Canadian and American manufacturers. Groceries, Crockery, Glassware, &c. Great advantages are possessed by this business in its purchases and the prices cannot be discounted in any business in this section of the Country. W. McWhinney is carrying the business forward with great success. With a business of this character and the advantages it offers to the public; there is no reason to go outside Waterford to trade.
 

E. G. Christie

Permanent among our mercantile institutions is the popular Hardware Business of Mr. E. G. Christie. Ever since the inception of Mr. Christie's business one year ago, it has met with a steady and permanent increase in trade. He had always made it a point to handle the best lines of goods and is prepared to offer to his customers advantages which cannot be discounted. His stock is large, named and very complete. It consists of an excellent line of Shelf Hardware, as Builders Supplies and Tools, Cutlery of all kinds and Miscellaneous Goods, as Paints, ready mixed and dry, Oils, Varnishes, Glass, Putty, Nails, Wire, Harvest Tools, &c. We are pleased to note the success which has attended Mr. Christie's efforts and predict for him a brilliant future. We candidly recommend the business to the public.
 

J. Matchett

A valuable acquaintance to our mercantile interests, is the business conducted by the enterprising gentleman whose name appears at the head of this article and whom we have much pleasure in introducing to our readers. Mr. Matchett recently purchased the Grocery business of Messrs. Rammage & Co., and from the start he had made, no doubt will meet with brilliant success. He enjoys the advantages of a thoroughly practical experience and is well posted in every detail of the Grocery trade. His stock is large and well selected. It embraces everything in the Grocery line as pure Teas, Coffees, Sugars, Spices, Cannel Goods, and all the table delicacies, also the best brands of Flour and Feed and Provisions of all kinds; Crockery, Glass, China and Wooden Wares, Lamps and Lamp Goods, Fruits in season, &c. He has also added a splendid line of Boots and Shoes of the best makes. His store is a model of neatness and artistic taste. In Mr. Matchett the public will find an obliging and upright business man and we wish him abundant success.
 

A. M. Barber

A few words in our business sketches in reference to Waterford's leading Furniture Emporium and Factory will prove of interest to our readers. The stock carried by this gentleman is large and varied, and from it the people of Waterford and country surrounding can select anything they want in the line of Household Furniture at prices to suit the taste and means of all. Furniture is also manufactured and a superior class of goods is turned out. The Undertaking department is also carefully attended to, a full line of undertaking equipments being on hand as coffins, caskets, funeral robes, a hearse, &c. Ever since the business came under its present management it has met with more than ordinary success, and the trade is rapidly increasing.
 

W. C. Lundy & Co.

This business has been established in our town for ten years. It has always enjoyed a large share of public patronage and at present is better than ever able to supply the wants of its customers. Mr. W. C. Lundy the enterprising manager, leaves nothing undone to meet the wants of his patrons. He handles a line of goods as fine as the markets afford, and keeps his stock well assorted. The stock consists of Dry Goods as Fancy Dress and Staple Goods, Haberdashery, small wares as Gloves, Hosiery, &c., Staples as Prints, Cottons, &c. Tailoring Cloths as Tweeds, Worsteds, &c., Hats and Caps, Gents Furnishings, Boots and Shoes, Groceries and Provision, Crockery, Glass, China, Woodenwares, &c. Mr. Lundy by doing a cash trade is able to keep his prices below all competitors. The store is the only one north of the creek and in it your wants can be supplied with all goods in the line at prices the smallest advances on cost.
 

J. Joyce

For over 14 years the above named gentleman has been supplying the people of Waterford and country surrounding with everything in his line, viz: Boots and Shoes, Groceries, Confectioneries, &c. At present his Boot and Shoe department is well stocked and he is offering some rare bargains.
 

A. M. Little

Foremost in the mercantile interests in Waterford, is the well known business of the above named gentleman. Mr. Little carries a stock of Goods consisting of general Dry Goods, Hats and Caps, Boots and Shoes, Groceries, &c. that is large, named and well adapted to his trade. The business has been established about 20 years and has always enjoyed a large share of public patronage.
 

J. G. James

The above named gentleman is a representative business man of the town, is engaged in the Tinsmithing business and does a large trade. He does all kinds of work in Tin, Iron and Copper Wares, as Roof Sheeting, Eavetroughing, &c. and keeps on hand a full line of all kinds of Tin, Iron and Copper Wares. The business is well patronized and the trade is constantly increasing.
 

L. P. Pursel & Son

The Furniture business of the above named gentleman is deserving of more than a passing glance on our business sketches. Those gentlemen keep on hand a first class stock of Furniture of all kinds and their prices are very low. They aim at keeping a superior class of goods and are largely patronized by the general public.
 

J. F. Ashley

A representative Carriage and Wagon Factory of the village, is the business of Mr. J. F. Ashley, which is well and favorably known to our readers. Mr. Ashley manufactures all kinds of wheeled vehicles as Carriages, Buggies, Wagons, &c., and turns out a superior class of goods.
 

J. P. Redker

The Merchant Tailor business of the above named gentleman, is one of the most popular of its kind in the town. A good stock of Cloths is always on hand, and Clothing is made to order in the best style and at the shortest notice.
 

Green Bros.

The above named gentlemen have recently started a Factory for the manufacture of the Standard Metallic Shingles in this place, which will give employment to several hands and prove of great benefit to the town. They have also a Factory in operation now in Detroit.
 

J. H. Pratten

Mr. J. H. Pratten, Carriage Manufacturer, is deserving of special mention in our business sketches. He manufactures Wagons, Buggies, and all kinds of wheeled vehicles and does a large trade.
