For the past thiry years Mr. Twiss has successfully operated a two hundred acre dairy farm, situated just outside the village of Courtland. He was held in the highest esteem by all who knew him. While a man of reserved manners, he filled important positions in the community, having served several terms on the trustee board of the village school and has been a pillar in the Baptist Church for many years, having served as both deacon and treasurer. He was a Conservative in politics and always took a deep interest in municipal and community affairs. Mr. Twiss died suddenly while attending a church convention in Brantford, Ont., Nov. 23, 1929. Mr. Twiss was born sixty nine years ago on the Twiss farm adjoining the village of Courtland and was the second son of the late Frances and Sarah Twiss who were pioneer settlers of Middleton Township. In the year 1902, Mr. Twiss was united in marriage to Miss Frances Bell Hampton, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Hampton of Middleton Township. There are left to mourn his loss beside his widow, two daughters and one son: Miss Kathleen, professional nurse attached to the Toronto General Hospital, Miss Ina M., on the teaching staff of a Toronto public school and Mr. Frank Twiss at home, also two brothers and one sister, Mr. O. F. Twiss of Tillsonburg, Mr. George W. Twiss of Windsor and Mary Simmons. A short funeral service was held at his late residence and from there to the Baptist church which was filled to capacity. Interment was made in the Baptist burying ground. Rev. Mr. Guthrie had charge of the service. The pall bearers were T. Ferris, Frank Simmons, Frank Chips, Frank Lowell, Freeman Cousins and George Veit. |
