A feeling of gloom settled over
the village and vicinity last Saturday when the sad news of the sudden
death of Nursing Sister Alice Truesdale [sic] reached here. The deceased was the second daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Wm. H. Truesdale [sic] of Waterford, and was born
here about 27 years ago.
After a course in the Public and High
Schools of Waterford, she resolved to become a nurse, and graduated with
high honors from the Guelph General Hospital in 1912, and practiced
there about two years afterwards. The late Miss Truesdale [sic] then
took a post-graduate course at Sloan's Hospital, New York.
When the call came for nurses overseas
Alice signed up and after a year's training in the London Military
Hospital, went overseas, did her bit and returned on March, 1919.
This noble girl was idle only a few weeks
after returning, when she became matron of the Freeport Military
Hospital.
The week before last she got a few days off duty, came home
and went to Buffalo on Friday, returned Saturday and went right back to
Freeport.
On Wednesday of last week she took ill
and thought it was a bilious attack, but gradually became worse and was
hurried to Guelph Hospital Friday, where it was learned she had a form
of spinal meningitis. Her mother and sister Neva hastened to Guelph and
reached there just three hours before the dear, brave girl passed away.
Needless to say the sorrowing parents,
two sisters, Neva and Laura, and two brothers, Gordon and Howard, are
heart-broken over the affair, and the deepest sympathy goes out to them.
The remains were brought first to
Brantford, to the home of O. E. Truesdale [sic], uncle of the
deceased, on Saturday, and the funeral took place at 3.00 o'clock.
Service was held in the Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. J. McLachlan,
assisted by Rev. J. B. Moore. Interment took place in Greenwood
Cemetery.
The following floral tributes show the
high esteem in which the deceased was held. [List of tributes omitted.]
Nurse Truesdale [sic] was beloved and admired by all who knew her and
will be greatly missed.
