A native of Vittoria
and a resident of this district all his life, Arthur D. Teeple, Wilson
Avenue, Simcoe, will observe his 88th birthday on Thursday.
Possessing excellent memory
and health, Mr. Teeple is able to be about town every day and is
well-known to most residents of Simcoe. For a number of years he was
caretaker of Lynnwood and Wellington Parks.
A son of the late Albert
Teeple and Mary Jane Baumwart, he had one sister who passed away some
time ago. He married the former Mary Vrooman of Townsend, the rites
being performed in Vittoria by Rev. Mr. Pugsley in 1880. Mrs. Teeple
passed away in 1920.
He has one daughter, Mrs.
Erie McDonald of Winnipeg; and two sons, Ervie of Townsend and Morley of
Toronto. The latter has been a member of the Toronto Police Force for
the past 32 years.
Mr. Teeple resided in
Vittoria until 1885 when he moved to Woodhouse for a short time before
moving again, this time to Townsend Township, where he resided until
1923 when he came to Simcoe.
For
35 years he operated a farm and was also a cheesemaker and worked on the
railroad for some time. After coming to Simcoe he was caretaker of the
local parks for six or seven years.
Mr.
Teeple recalls when Vittoria was a thriving community. He well remembers
when the now quiet village boasted of two or three blacksmith shops, two
cabinet-making concerns, two harness shops, two taverns, a distillery, a
tannery, a flour mill, three churches and an excellent community band.
A
consistent reader of The Reformer, Mr. Teeple is believed to be its
oldest subscriber, having subscribed continuously for the past 73 years.
This is a remarkable record, both for Mr. Teeple and for the paper.
