The Last Capt.
Spain
Capt. J. G. Spain, who
died at Port Dover on Tuesday, July 21st, was a well-known and
interesting Norfolk County man. Years ago Capt. Spain was proprietor of
an excursion steamer on Lake Erie with headquarters in Port Rowan,
where he lived for a number of years. Later he took up business in
Simcoe and was proprietor of "The Bazaar." Orchard Beach, Port
Dover, was his next venture, to which he devoted his time and made many
improvements before selling to the present owners.
The late Captain was an enthusiastic antiquarian and established at
the beach a small museum which he afterwards presented to the Ontario
Government, the most of which is now in the museum at the Agricultural
College at Guelph. He was always a public spirited man and while a
resident at Port Dover served on the village council and took an enthusiastic
interest in the town park there.
Capt. Spain was 81 years old at the time of his death and passed
peacefully away after being in failing health for some time. He leaves a
widow and other relatives to mourn his departure. Interment was made at
Port Dover cemetery on Sunday, July 23rd.
