The death took place in Edmonton
on 19 Jul 1928 of Frank Slaght of Galahad, Alberta. Mr. and Mrs. Slaght
were in the city attending the exhibition, and they were sitting in a
cafeteria awaiting their dinner, the end came suddenly and quietly.
The funeral services from his
late residence, Galahad, on Sunday afternoon, were conducted by Rev. J.
R. Geeson, and were largely attended. The floral tributes and many
thoughtful acts of kindness show to the family at this time testified to
the esteem and friendship which Mr. and Mrs. Slaght had won for
themselves in the community.
The deceased was born near
Waterford, Ont., on 10 Mar 1867, and was married to Sarah Goold of the
same place, 30 May 1888. Besides his widow he is survived by three sons,
Lorne of Winnipeg; Stanley of Vancouver; Delmar on the home farm; four
grandchildren, two brothers, Andrew of Scotland, Ont., Will of Buffalo,
N.Y., and one sister, Mrs. A. R. Ewing, Waterford, Ont.
When a young man he united with
the Methodist Church at Wilsonville, and with his wife remained a member
there until he moved to Alberta. He attended the first church service
held in Merna and became actively associated with what is now the United
Church there.
In 1926 [sic] he came to
Alberta and settled on an unbroken prairie farm which he still owned at
the time of his death, though he himself moved to Galahad some eight
years ago.
The pallbearers representing the
districts of Merna and Galahad and the municipal council on which he
served for six years, were: A. Peacock, W. R. Stewart, E. Ehier, T. J.
Elliott, A. Wright and George Laings.
The body was laid to rest in the
Merna cemetery, near to those of many of his neighbors of the earlier
days.
And so passed another of the
pioneers.
