Last Wednesday evening, at Boyne City, Mich., Mr. Joshua Pratt
passed away in the 82nd year of his age. The late Mr. Pratt was by
trade an expert watchmaker, and in the late sixties or early seventies
worked with the late G. L. Darling, Norfolk street, Simcoe, living
over the store.
A few of the old-timers in Simcoe may remember this esteemed
citizen. Mrs. Sutherland Shaw, his youngest daughter, was born in
Simcoe and it was at her residence in Boyne City, Mich. where he died.
Mrs. Shaw is the wife of Sutherland Shaw, owner of the large tanneries
at Boyne City.
From Simcoe they moved to Port Burwell, going into business at that
place when it was a flourishing shipping point. From Port Burwell they
moved to Guelph, from Guelph to Bracebridge, establishing a business
at that place, and conducting it successfully for 4[0] years.
While a citizen of Bracebridge he was active in municipal work, in
fact all work that was to the advantage of his town, and was a large
property owner. Only a short time ago they gave up business, he and
Mrs. Pratt spending their time with Mrs. Shaw at Boyne City, and Mrs.
S. H. Armstrong, the elder daughter, in Bracebridge.
Flags on the public buildings in Bracebridge were flying at
half-mast all day Friday, the day of the funeral, in honor of her late
pioneer citizen.
