Noted Church Worker, Mrs. J. R. Pond Dies

One of Simcoe's first ladies, Mrs. J. R. Pond, 265 Norfolk Street South, died in Norfolk General Hospital on Saturday after a short illness. She was 84.

A tireless worker for St. James United Church, Mrs. Pond was probably best known to the town as a whole through the multitude of banquets, suppers and wedding receptions for which she was responsible as leader of the Christian Builders Group of the St. James W.A. for the past 12 years.

Her fine record at the church included life memberships in the W.M.S. and W.A.; her appointment as the first lady Elder of the Session of St. James in 1950, and teacher of the Plus Ultra Class for the past 15 years.

She was a member of the Haldimand-Norfolk W.M.S. Presbytery for 26 years, serving three terms as president, and was a past president of both the Cheapside United Church and St. James United W.M.S. organizations. Active in women's institute work, she was once president of the Sandusk W.I. and did considerable Red Cross work during and after the war under the auspices of the institute. She was a life member of the W.C.T.U.

Born in Walpole township, she was the daughter of George Walker, who settled in Rainham township at the age of 12 with his parents who came from Lincolnshire, England, and Juliet Culver, a native of Rainham. She received her education at Saunders School, Nanticoke, and Port Dover High School, later attending the Model School, Simcoe, where she qualified as a teacher.

Mrs. Pond taught at Sandusk School for four years prior to her marriage in 1891 to James R. Pond in Cheapside United Church. They resided for 43 years in a home next to the old Pond homestead, moving to Simcoe in 1934 when Mr. Pond retired from farming. He died in 1947.

Surviving are six sons, Elvin of Walpole township, A. Leo, Claude W., Harold I., C. LeRoy and Victor W., all of Simcoe; one daughter, Mrs. Merrill Hare (Nina Evelyn) of Simcoe; two brothers, John Walker of Jarvis and Arthur Walker of Edmonton; and one sister, Mrs. John Henning of Nanticoke; also 26 grandchildren ans 21 great-grandchildren.

The body is resting at the George W. Baldock Funeral Home for funeral service in St. James United Church at 2.30 p.m. Tuesday with Rev. Sylvanus Edworthy officiated, assisted by Dr. W. J. Mumford, and interment in Oakwood Cemetery.
