J.
N. Pierce died at his home in Port Rowan at twelve o'clock on
Wednesday night, October 13, after a wearisome illness, in his 62nd
year.
He was a member
of one of the most distinguished families of Houghton, the surviving
members of which are Warren, George and Bridge of Michigan, Mrs.
Parker of St. Thomas, and Plewis Pierce of Port Rowan.
In early life he
married Miss Abigail Butcher, a daughter of the late W. M. Butcher, of
South Walsingham, and their surviving children are Mrs. Pearl Kelly,
Mrs. J. W. Cronk, Mrs. J. W. Hutchinson, and
C. H. Pierce of Hespeler.
Over a quarter
century ago he came to Port Rowan and developed into one of the most
energetic, resourceful and courageous business men which this village
has ever had.
He was a hardware merchant, a dry goods merchant, farm
machinery representative and manufacturer by turns, and was recognized
as a strong and capable man in every undertaking.
By his death Port
Rowan loses one of its most successful and useful men as well as one
of its best citizens.
He was a staunch
member of the Methodist church and one of the most liberal supporters
of that body in Port Rowan. He was a lifelong member of the executive
of that body, one of the chief contributors to the building of Neal
Memorial church, and one of the staunchest examples of pure living
which any community could desire. At the time of his death he was a
member of the Board of Education, and had been a member of the village
council for years.
The funeral was
held from the home on Friday afternoon, the house being filled to
overflowing with those ever ready to show their every respect to the
deceased and the deepest sympathy for the bereaved family. The Rev. A.
I. Terryberry of Renton, a former pastor and personal friend of the
family conducted the services. Interment took place
