With [sic] regret to
chronicle the death of Mr. A. H. Nelles, which took place on Monday
morning about two o'clock. A slight cut upon his finger, which he received
about a month ago, and which festered and infused poison into the blood,
in conjunction with a system somewhat run down, carrying him off.
Mr. Nelles was born at Mt.
Pleasant, in Brant County, in the year 1819, and was in his 65th year. For
many years he followed the avocation of a farmer, until about twelve or
fourteen years ago he came into town, engaging in the insurance business,
in which he was eminently successful.
His familiar figure, and his
active and energetic manner were well known to most of our citizens, and
he will be much missed upon our streets. He was generally respected and
liked both in business, social and church circles, and leaves a large
circle of family friends and acquaintances who will sincerely regret his
sudden and comparatively early death, for, though up in years, he
possessed all the activity and vitality of a much younger man.
He leaves a family of one son, Dr.
Melvin Nelles, of Canton, Illinois, and four daughters, Mrs. H. McK.
Wilson, of this city, Mrs. Longstreet of Winnipeg, who left her home a
bride just four weeks ago today, and two unmarried. Mrs. Nelles died some
two or three years ago after a long and lingering illness.
His mother, who is a sister of Mr.
Russel Hardy, the father of Hon. A. S. Hardy, still lives, her home being
in Simcoe. Mr. Nelles has a number of brothers who are well-known in their
several spheres, among whom are the Rev. Dr. Nelles, Principal of Victoria
University, Dr. J. A. Nelles, and Dr. H. H. Nelles, of London, Messrs. T.
R. Nelles and Abram Nelles of Simcoe, and W. W. Nelles of Rockwood. One
sister, now deceased, was married to Dr. [Uzziel] Ogden of Toronto, and
another, Miss Celeste Nelles, lives in Simcoe.
Mr. Nelles was strongly Liberal in
his political convictions, and has been a Justice of the Peace for this
county many years. He always took an active interest in the Methodist
church with which he was identified, and was a trustee and member of the
official board of the Brant Avenue Church since its formation, some ten or
twelve years ago.
The family will have wide and
general sympathy in their sudden bereavement. The funeral takes place on
Thursday next, at 2 o'clock, to the family burying ground at Mt. Pleasant.
