Celebrate
China Wedding
A surprise
celebration was extended Mr. and Mrs. Charles T. West at their
residence on College Avenue,
on Friday night last.
Saturday, June
29th
was the 20th anniversary of their wedding day and about 20 of their
friends took time by the forclock and dropped in on them unawares, it
being impossible for all to be present on Saturday night.
About 11 p.m. on
Friday, Mr. and Mrs. West, who were sitting on their verandah, saw a party wending their way across the street leading to College
Avenue. Mrs. West exclaimed to her husband, "Look, Charlie,
at all the people coming across the road! I wonder where they are
going this time of night?"
"Search
me," replied Charlie. "Why they are
coming up this street!" continued Mrs. West. "Many happy
returns," shouted the party as they entered and took possession
of the house.
"Why, you've
made a mistake in the day!" said Mrs. West. "Be calm,
wife," replied Charlie, tapping his better half on the shoulder:
"I guess they'll still be here on the 29th anyway, and it looks
as if
they're pretty well supplied with eats."
After
congratulations, a short and most appropriate speech was made by Mr.
Morton Brown, who named the different donors of the gifts of china
laid out on the table as follows: Mr. and Mrs. Fred R. Pursel, Miss
Edith Perry, Mrs. William Cope of Toronto, Mr. and Mrs. Stalker, and
five of the men of Trinity Church choir who compose the Saturday night
singing class and their wives.
Mr. and Mrs. West
were greatly taken by surprise and responded nobly, thanking all for
their forethought and kindness, which Charlie said would never be
forgotten.
After the singing
of "For They Are Jolly Good Fellows," cards and refreshments
were enjoyed, and June 29th was pretty well advanced when the National
Anthem was sung.
