Sgt.
Walters Home
Sgt. John Walters arrived
home Thursday evening last and was greeted at the station by
hundreds of our citizens and given cheer after cheer. John is
looking fine and his friends are all glad to welcome his home. At
our request, John has written the following short account of his
travels.
"I was a Sgt. in D
Company of the 133rd. We went overseas in November 1916 but on
arriving in England we were broken up and sent to different units
in France.
"Some of our boy went
to France soon after arriving in England, but as the weather was
bad I was not able to go over to France until the spring.
"I had some
difficulty in getting to France as my health was very poor, but in
April 1917 I went over to the 123rd Battalion, which were the 3rd
Divisional Pioneers, and it was with that unit, along with several
other boys from Waterford, I saw my first bit of active service in
the great war.
"After being in
France for nearly 17 months I was sent back to dear old England,
or Blighty, as the soldiers call it, and since then I have been
visiting my mother's people at every opportunity.
"My mother left
England some 50 years ago and has never been back. It was a great
pleasure to meet people in her home town that remembered her, and
of course hearing her tell about the different people and places
so often, I was able to enjoy myself much better.
"I wish to let the
dear people know how thankful I am to be home again and to thank
everybody for the kindly interest they had in me and my dear
comrades of D company. Some will never return, but of course that
cannot be helped.
"I was pleased with
the reception given me at the station. This is the second time
that I have had the honor of representing Waterford in the the
wars that have made Canada famous and now that the boys are coming
home I hope to see each one get a reception. Let them be bigger
and louder as each one comes and the last one let it be the best
of all.
"I will close now
with love to all and a Merry Christmas from onen who had learned
that there is no place like home."
