Death of Norfolk Pioneer
On Saturday 1 Jun 1918 there
passed away one of the oldest residents of Norfolk in the person
of Mrs. Alexander Skinner, Sr., who had attained the great age of 90 years and 2 months.
Mrs. Skinner, whose maiden
name was Eliza Scroggie, came to Canada from Aberdeenshire Scotland,
at the time of her marriage. She and her husband, the late
Alexander Skinner, settled in Norfolk County and endured the hardships of pioneer life in a new and rough country, and literally hewed for
themselves and family a home from the pine forests of northern
Townsend.
To them were born three sons
and six daughters, of whom six are still living: Alex Skinner Jr. of
Townsend, W. A. Skinner of Simcoe,
Mrs. J. M. Hyde of Edmonton, Mrs.
A. B. Horning, Mrs. John Welsh and Miss Clara Skinner of Windham.
Deceased enjoyed the best of
health until the death of her husband 14 years ago. Since then she had been gradually failing,
both in mind and body. In her declining years she
was most carefully and lovingly attended by her youngest daughter, Miss Clara, who has been her constant attendant, ministering to her
every want and very patiently bearing with the whims and frailties of age.
The funeral was 3 Jun 1918, Rev. Mr. Rogers, her pastor, conducting the service. Interment was made in Wilsonville Cemetery.
