A lightly edited transcript of a page 3 item in the 15 Oct 1880 issue of the Norfolk Reformer.

death by drowning

It is our sad and painful duty to chronicle the death, by drowning, of Wm. Ross, about 10 miles above Port Midland, off the schooner Louise, of this place, on Monday morning last.

The young man fell into the lake from the topmast, while attempting to stow the main-gaff topsail in a gale, and was never seen after.

The deceased worked in this office for over two years. He was very much respected by all who knew him, and the sad news cast a gloom over the village.

The bereaved parents have the heartfelt sympathy of all. -- Port Rowan Age.
