With
the passing away of Walter Hellyer in his 88th year, on Thursday,
5 Dec 1918 at the family home in Waterford, this county loses
another of its pioneer settlers.
The late Mr. Hellyer was
born in England, came to this country when a lad of 16 years, and
after being united in marriage to Permelia Fonger, settled on the
homestead just east of Townsend Centre, now occupied by their
granddaughter, Mrs. Fred Ward.
Had the deceased lived a
week or two longer it would have been possible to celebrate
the diamond jubilee of his wedding anniversary as the date of
their marriage was sometime between Christmas and New Years.
The union was blessed with
a family of one daughter, Mrs. Wm. Lewis of Waterford, and three
sons, Albert of Waterford, the eldest of the family, Elijah of
Townsend Centre, and Clarence of Waterford, all of whom have been
industrious and prosperous.
The late Mr. Hellyer was a
man of sterling worth, keen intellect and sound judgment. Until
his knee-cap was broken about seven years ago by being thrown from
a buggy near the M.C.R. tracks on Main Street, was as smart and
active as many a younger man.
Even as an invalid he
could read without his glasses, and being able to retain what he
read, kept right up with the times and was possessed of all his
mental faculties up till the last.
He is survived by a
sorrowing widow, four children, 11 grandchildren, and 7
great-grandchildren, to whom the sympathy of their many friends is
extended.
The funeral, which was
attended by many friends and relatives, took place Saturday, the
7th, at 2:30 p.m., the services conducted by the Rev. J. B. Moore.
Interment took place in Greenwood Cemetery.
