The
following is taken from the Edmonton Journal of 30 Nov
1918, giving the pleasing intelligence that a Simcoe lad, Bert
Haddow, who got his early education in the public and high schools
of Simcoe, has been named to a seat on the faculty of the
University of Alberta.
He has many friends here,
where his father and sister still live, who will read of his
elevation with pleasure.
"A. W. Haddow, acting
city engineer, has been appointed to take the professorship of
civil and municipal engineering at the University of Alberta,
succeeding the late Professor Muir Edwards, who occupied that
office.
"He will commence his
duties on the opening of the instituion. The new appointee will
not relinquish his position in charge of the city's engineering
department, but will devote part time to the carrying out of these
official duties.
"It is understood
that the arrangement with the university heads is of a temporary
nature at present.
"Mr. Haddow is a
graduate of Queen's University, Kingston, taking the degree of
B.Sc. in 1909. He joined the local engineering department in the
same year.
"After becoming an
assistant in the roadways branch in 1910, he was made acting city
engineer in 1915, taking the place of A. J. Latornell, who went on
overseas service.
"During the present
year Mr. Haddow was offered the post of city engineer by the city
commissioners, but did not accept it."
