On Sunday, Feb. 20th,
James McKnight passed away at the home of his son, Henry, in Teeterville,
in the 89th year of his age. He was one of the oldest and most respected
residents of the township of Windham, having moved there from Beverly in
the year 1855. His honesty of purpose and integrity of character entitled
him to the confidence of the public, and during his life time he filled
many positions of trust in the township and county with honor to himself
and for the benefit of those who entrusted him with their support and
confidence.
Mr. McKnight was born
in the county of Down, Ireland, on March 24th, 1821, and came to Canada
with his parents in 1832 and settled in Beverly. In 1847 he married Sarah,
daughter of the late Daniel Wray, of Beverly. For many years he
successfully carried on the lumbering business in Windham and at the same
conducted a large farm.
In politics the
deceased was a consistent Conservative and was one of the stalwarts of
that party. He was a generous and active member of the Presbyterian
Church. He was an old and esteemed member of Frederick Lodge of
Freemasons, Delhi, and his funeral was conducted by the Masonic order as a
mark of respect for a worthy brother.
His funeral, which
was largely attended took place on Tuesday following his death, when
service was held in the Presbyterian church at Windham Centre, when six of
his sons acted as pallbearers.
