A
gloom passed over Vanessa Station when it was learned on Sunday
morning (June 10), that Mr. Arthur McKerlie had passed away. Although
he had been very ill with pernicious anaemia
for five years, yet by force of will and doctor's skill he had battled
each relapse until this one, when death rather suddenly claimed him.
He was born on
the farm on which he died, just fifty years ago, and had lived there
always with the exception of two years that he spent in Simcoe.
He was of a
bright, hopeful, contented disposition, a good neighbor and a loyal
friend, always ready to help in time of need. He was loved and
respected by all and will be greatly missed.
He was a
consistent member of the Methodist Church, and lived and died in the
calm assurance that "it is well with my soul."
He leaves,
besides his devoted wife, who was Miss Kate McCool, to mourn their
loss, five sisters, Mrs. Lounsberry, Binghampton, N.Y.; Mrs. Serles,
Buffalo; Mrs. W. A. Ball, Simcoe; Mrs. Kennedy, Teeterville; Miss Nina
McLean, N.W.T., and two brothers, Wallie and H. S., Vanessa.
The funeral was
held on Tuesday afternoon at his late residence, Rev. Mr. Smitherman
officiated at the house, being assisted by Rev. Mr. Dey at the grave.
The burial was at Oakwood Cemetery, Simcoe. The pallbearers were
Messrs. Geo. Parker, W. H. Bartholomew, William Barker, George Biddle,
John M. Gould and Herachel Glover.
The numerous
beautiful floral offerings included: Pillow, Wife; wreath, sisters and
brothers; crescent wreath Mrs. and Misses McCool; wreath, Mr. and Mrs.
