Golden Wedding

A happy event was celebrated at Blayney on Tuesday, May 18th, when Mr. and Mrs. John Wesley Matthews commemorated the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage. On the 18th of May, 1859, Wesley Matthews and Sarah Potts were made man and wife by Elder Steinhoff, at his home a few miles east of Simcoe, and on Tuesday of last week they with their children, grandchildren, and a few close friends, met to do honor to their golden wedding day at their home in Charlotteville.

[Paragraph omitted]

Out of a family of seven children, four were living to participate in the festivities. They are John N. of Blayney, James W. of Vittoria, W. Delos of New Jersey, and Mrs. A. Dowswell of Muncey. Others who assisted in honoring the bride and groom were Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Potts and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. [.] G. Rose, Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Lewis and daughter of Simcoe, Mr. and Mrs. A. Tisdale of Walsh, Mrs. Curtis and Mrs. Elliot of Blayney. Besides the children, ten grandchildren were in attendance. Four grandchildren and one great-grandchild were absent.

Mr. and Mrs. Matthews are hale and hearty, though their respective ages are 80 and 70 years. They are among the pioneers of this district and have lived useful and industrious lives. Mr. Matthews has occupied many positions of honor and importance in township and county affairs. Their many friends will rejoice to hear of their having been spared many years to their family.
