Mrs. Thomas Maguire

The death occurred on Sunday, July 11th, of Mrs. Thos. Maguire, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Joseph Collinson of Houghton Centre, with whom she had resided for the past three years. On Sunday afternoon of last week, Mrs. Maguire fell down a flight of stairs into the cellar. A few minutes later she was found in an unconscious state on the cellar floor. Concussion of the brain followed and resulted in death.

Deceased, who was born on June 5, 1822, was a daughter of Ephraim Cole Mitchell and Mary (McCall) Mitchell, and a granddaughter of Donald McCall of Charlotteville, all of whom were U. E. Loyalists. At the age of twenty-two she was married to Mr. Thos. Maguire, of Richmond, who predeceased her eight years ago, in his 87th year. About 55 years ago Mr. and Mrs. Maguire settled in Houghton, near Talbot street, where they found the place a wilderness. They were blessed with a family of nine children, seven sons and two daughters, eight of whom survive. They are: George A. of Windsor; J. Wilton of Glen Meyer; Allen D., of Wallaceburg; Henry B., of Kinglake; Edwin C., of Yarmouth Centre; Albert E., of Vienna; Mrs. Jos. Collinson of Houghton Centre, and Mrs. Wesley McKoy of Mabee. William S., the oldest son, died in New York six years ago.

Deceased was the youngest of five children, all of whom predeceased her. In Mrs. Maguire's early life she was of the Anglican faith, but later, owing to the fact that there was no church of this denomination in her neighborhood she became identified with the Methodist church. She was ever ready to extend a helping hand to the needy, and throughout her life her faith in Christ was steadfast.

The funeral took place at Guysboro, deceased's former home, on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the six surviving sons acting as pallbearers. The service was conducted by Rev. Mr. Larkland of Fairground, and a large concourse of sorrowing relatives ad friends followed the remains to the grave as a last token of respect. The floral offerings were numerous and beautiful, showing with who high acclaim the late Mrs. Maguire was held by all who knew her.
